Gathering in Africa

Gathering in Africa

At the beginning of July, 2014, Alpha Uganda hosted its second ever East Africa Week Conference (EAW) at Ggaba National Seminary in Kampala. The week was inclusive of four parts - a retreat for our National Alpha Office staff, followed by a two-day Leadership Conference, and finally a Master Trainers programme running simultaneously alongside the Marriage Course 101 training.

There were 130 delegates represented at the event from 8 different countries across East Africa including honoured guest Rt. Rev. Sandy Millar (Bishop of Uganda and Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of London), the Vicar General of Kampala Archdiocese Mons. Charles Kasibante, Bishop Tim Wambunya from Kenya, and Senior Presidential Advisor Cris Rwakasiisi (Uganda).

Worship, seminars, training courses, and information sessions all added to the success of this event. One Ugandan delegate commented: ‘If I had one word to describe how I feel after participating in EAW, it would be equipped.’

There is great anticipation and excitement over the expected outcomes of this event. EAW has been so important for the effectiveness, expansion, and passion with which our offices and partners move forward with the tools they have been given to assist in the re-evangelisation of the nations and the transformation of society.

Philip's Story

Philip's Story

Lagos, Nigeria

Running Alpha opened my eyes to see the beauty of fellowship over food. It helped me see the importance of sharing our Christian faith & giving people the opportunity to express their opinions.

A friend introduced Philip to Alpha. He decided to run Alpha for his college friends.

He says, "One of the things which influenced my decision was my desire to see fellow youths draw closer to Christ. I wanted to create a space where we could come together to explore the Christian faith. I wanted to see our discussion progress from civil engineering, football and girls to faith in God. Thus, I decided to run Alpha together with some of my course mates in school."

Emma's Story

Emma's Story

Within the space of a day I went from being the youngest child to an only child.

After the death of her sister, Emma was left with a huge emptiness. She began isolating herself from close relationships and the more isolated she became, the more difficult it was to re-engage.

One day, her father dared her to try Alpha. She turned around, took a risk and signed up.

Xola's Story

Xola's Story

I used to think that God was not for me but for other people

Xola grew up in a Samora, a township in Cape Town, South Africa. With other young men from his community, he got involved with gangs, drugs and was eventually arrested.

While in prison, Xola began to realise that he could not live the life he had previously led.

Find out more about how he came to try Alpha and what’s he’s been doing each day since then to transform his township community.

Everywhere, Everyday

We all explore. Every day. In small ways, and in big.

Millions of people across the world have explored life, faith and meaning on Alpha.

What is Alpha?

Alpha is an opportunity for anyone, anywhere, to freely explore their unique questions about life, faith and God. It is a series of interactive sessions exploring the Christian faith, typically run over eleven weeks. Alpha is run all around the globe, in cafés, churches, schools, universities, homes, prisons – you name it.

The sessions usually have three key elements:

Whether around a kitchen table, or a quick catch up over coffee and cake, food is a great way to build community and it's a priority for every Alpha.

The talks, delivered live or as a film, are designed to engage and inspire conversation, exploring the big issues around faith and unpacking the basics of Christianity. Watch a talk >

The chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic in an honest, friendly and open environment. There’s no obligation to say anything and there’s nothing you can’t say (seriously).
