Relationships Matter

Relationships Matter

Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out and touched him. Mark 1:41

Kenya

Jesus was moved by compassion and so should we be. While it might not be easy to model his example, we can build on strong relationships that would enable us to have a wider impact on the spiritually needy around us.  It is these relationships that open doors to more opportunities for ministry and help draw support for the Alpha activities.

Personally, I came to chair the Board of Alpha Kenya in 2006 through a relationship with and encouragement from Tricia Neil, current President of Alpha International.

Through a relationship with her, I developed friendships with a wider network of people. Building on these relationships, I was able, later on, to identify the right people to bring on to the Board of Alpha Kenya Trust.

From those early days when the National Alpha Office (NAO) was set up, to the present times when most churches are now familiar with Alpha, many lives have been touched by the Gospel through Alpha.

A network of young volunteers, motivated by a desire to see their generation transformed by the Gospel, and encouraged by a close relationship with the NAO, quickly became the driving force of the ministry of Alpha.

Working in close partnership with local churches, the NAO has been able to take Alpha to hitherto unreached places and peoples. In two areas in particular – prisons and schools – we have witnessed a spectacular growth in numbers of attendees as well as in institutions hosting Alpha.

Thanks to the recognition by the Government of the value of Alpha in helping to transform lives, the doors of all the prisons and schools in the country, have been opened to Alpha.

At the heart of it all has been one common thread: relationships – with church leaders, community leaders, representatives of non-governmental organizations, prisons chaplains and other strategic leaders.

As we continue to train leaders and communities to run Alpha, we look forward to  forging more solid partnerships in the areas of prayer support, networking and financial support, based on clear and sustained relationships. This is what will propel us to the next level.

Emma's Story

Emma's Story

Mexico

Within the space of a day I went from being the youngest child to an only child.

After the death of her sister, Emma was left with a huge emptiness. She began isolating herself from close relationships and the more isolated she became, the more difficult it was to re-engage.

One day, her father dared her to try Alpha. She turned around, took a risk and signed up.

Xola's Story

Xola's Story

I used to think that God was not for me but for other people

Xola grew up in a Samora, a township in Cape Town, South Africa. With other young men from his community, he got involved with gangs, drugs and was eventually arrested.

While in prison, Xola began to realise that he could not live the life he had previously led.

Find out more about how he came to try Alpha and what’s he’s been doing each day since then to transform his township community.

Everywhere, Everyday

We all explore. Every day. In small ways, and in big.

Millions of people across the world have explored life, faith and meaning on Alpha.

What is Alpha?

Alpha is an opportunity for anyone, anywhere, to freely explore their unique questions about life, faith and God. It is a series of interactive sessions exploring the Christian faith, typically run over eleven weeks. Alpha is run all around the globe, in cafés, churches, schools, universities, homes, prisons – you name it.

The sessions usually have three key elements:

Whether around a kitchen table, or a quick catch up over coffee and cake, food is a great way to build community and it's a priority for every Alpha.

The talks, delivered live or as a film, are designed to engage and inspire conversation, exploring the big issues around faith and unpacking the basics of Christianity. Watch a talk >

The chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic in an honest, friendly and open environment. There’s no obligation to say anything and there’s nothing you can’t say (seriously).
